Gwen Frostic (April 26, 1906 – April 25, 2001) born as Sara Gwendolen Frostic, was an American artist, entrepreneur, author, and Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame inductee. A lifelong resident of Michigan, Frostic is known for her naturalist, Linocut block print artwork, created using Original Heidelberg Platten presses. She was one of America’s foremost nature inspired artists.
As a single woman in her fifties, Gwen moved to the northern woods of Michigan to observe, study, research, and sketch her native woods in all their wondrous detail. She then carefully carved the designs of nature into linoleum blocks. Gwen then used Heidleberg letter presses to bring her images alive on stationery.
Gwen not only became a very successful entrepreneur, but an accomplished artist, poet, educator, and philosopher. Known for her simple lines and delicate colors, this inspiring artist continued to produce new work well into her nineties.
